Senior Clinical Coder

Overview

As a Clinical Coder in the Dartford and Gravesham Clinical Coding Service, you will extract, code and analyse complex hospital data to support the Trust’s finance and reporting needs. You will work within a supportive, development‑minded team, contributing to a growing coding service with strong training, audit, and CPD opportunities. The role supports a move toward an electronic patient record, balancing accuracy with meeting tight deadlines. Responsibilities

• Abstract and code diagnoses and procedures from patient records (ICD-10/OPCS-4) across all specialties
• Ensure data is accurate, complete and timely for the Trust and Finance Department
• Mentor and supervise trainee and less experienced coding staff
• Interpret histology and radiology reports to ensure coding accuracy
• Enter codes into PAS/Medicode and maintain alignment with National Standards and local policies
• Identify and raise queries for insufficient/incorrect data
• Organise daily workload to meet coding targets and support consultant backlog
• Engage in continuous professional development and training; participate in audits
• Liaise with clinicians and staff about documentation affecting coding
• Investigate and rectify rejected or questioned data in systems
• Contribute to local policy and coding policy development
• Work across all specialties and support learning in the team
• Travel to other organisations for training when required
• Support ongoing coding training and testing to meet standards

Key requirements

• Possess the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ UK) or be working towards it
• Experience using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 in an acute hospital setting
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
• Experience coding for a wide range of specialties
• Proactive, flexible and comfortable with moving toward an electronic patient record
• Strong team working ethos
• Knowledge of NHS informatics systems and coding conventions
• Supervisory/leadership experience (desirable)
