Lead Design Engineer (Water)

Overview

As Lead Design Engineer in AECOM’s Water Solutions, you will steer a multidisciplinary design team to deliver water, wastewater and flood infrastructure projects. You’ll work across the full design lifecycle from feasibility to construction, partnering with clients and suppliers to produce innovative, value-driven solutions. The role places you on high-profile UK projects and international programmes, with a hybrid working model and strong emphasis on mentoring junior colleagues. You’ll shape technical capability and contribute to sustainable, health- and environment-conscious outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical delivery of water, wastewater and flood projects across the design lifecycle
• Oversee key work packages from concept to handover, coordinating with teams, clients and suppliers
• Collaborate with clients and partners to secure stakeholder buy-in and align on solutions
• Develop line management and mentoring for junior team members

Key requirements

• Experience managing technical delivery of water and wastewater engineering projects with multi-disciplinary knowledge, including treatment schemes and/or pipeline design
• Proven leadership of multi-disciplinary design teams
• Experience with water company, consultancy or contractor environments
• Hands-on experience designing complex wastewater treatment solutions
• Degree in civil/electrical/mechanical engineering or equivalent
• Chartered or Incorporated with ICE/CIWEM or working towards it
• Experience in feasibility studies, options appraisal and concept/design for water sector clients or design-build contractors
