Mechanical Engineer – HVAC

Overview

In this role you contribute to sustainable building design as part of Arup’s Building Engineering team in Southampton. You will develop mechanical designs across new build, retrofit and refurbishment projects, collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, energy-conscious solutions. You’ll progress toward chartership while gaining exposure to UK and international projects and advanced modelling tools. This is a hands-on, development-focused role in a collaborative, values-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Undertake mechanical calculations and analysis for heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water and plant/distribution systems
• Prepare design information, sketches, schedules, technical notes, reports and specifications with senior support
• Contribute to thermal comfort, energy and sustainability analysis using modelling outputs
• Support Revit models, drawings, spatial coordination and other design deliverables
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to develop coordinated, maintainable design solutions
• Attend design meetings, record actions and communicate progress, risks and support needs clearly
• Support site stage activities, including visits, inspections, queries and reviews
• Take part in design reviews, skills networks and CPD to develop technical knowledge and professional qualification

Key requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline
• Working towards professional qualification through CIBSE, IMechE or another relevant body
• Developing understanding of mechanical building services (heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water)
• Interest in sustainable design, energy efficiency, carbon reduction and operational performance
• Ability to produce clear calculations, drawings, schedules and written outputs with support
• Developing knowledge of standards, regulations, CIBSE guidance and industry good practice
• Familiarity with Revit, IES, Hevacomp, Excel or similar
• Good communication, curiosity, attention to detail and commitment to professional development
