Civil Highway Engineer

Overview

In this role you will contribute to highways and infrastructure design across feasibility to construction support, applying UK design standards. You will work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver practical solutions for local authorities and developers, balancing technical delivery with compliance and innovation. You’ll support project leads, mentor junior staff, and liaise with clients and contractors to drive project success. This role offers progression, hands-on design work, and exposure to a range of highways projects in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver highways and infrastructure design across feasibility to construction stages
• Produce designs compliant with UK standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, TSRGD)
• Support project leads on schemes including junction improvements, active travel, bus priority, public realm, drainage
• Oversee design drawings and tender documentation using Autocad/Civil 3D
• Respond to technical queries with clients, contractors and site teams
• Support road safety audits, design reviews and technical approvals
• Manage allocated tasks, programmes and budgets within scope
• Liaise with clients, local authorities and internal stakeholders under guidance
• Assist with change control and quality assurance processes
• Provide day-to-day technical support and mentoring to graduates and junior engineers
• Review work of less experienced team members and contribute to professional development
• Promote design quality and compliance with internal systems

Key requirements

• Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Experience in highways/infrastructure design in consultancy or local authority environments
• Working knowledge of UK design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20)
• Ability to prepare technical reports, drawings and data outputs independently
