Principal Fire Engineer

Overview

In this role you will deliver fire safety engineering support across UK and international projects. You will work on consultancy-based reviews, develop fire safety strategies, and lead fire projects within a multidisciplinary Arcadis team. You’ll collaborate with clients, designers and authorities to provide compliant, practical fire engineering solutions and mentor junior staff. This is an opportunity to shape safety practices on building and rail projects in a globally respected consulting firm.

Responsibilities

• Lead fire safety projects and project teams (senior level and above).
• Deliver fire engineering design work across multiple sectors, including buildings and rail.
• Support project delivery within time and cost budgets and manage client communications.
• Develop Fire Safety Strategy reports and Means of Escape analyses with evacuation planning.
• Apply UK and rail fire safety regulations and standards (AD B, BS 9999/ BS 7974/ BS 9991, NFPA, etc.).
• Stay updated on evolving regulations and standards; interpret them for client projects.
• Conduct third-party design verification and participate in internal/external project meetings.
• Mentor and line-manage junior staff and graduates; contribute to career development and bids.

Key requirements

• Experience across multiple sectors in a technical fire safety engineering environment.
• Strong client-facing skills and ability to build relationships.
• Robust problem-solving and accountability for allocated tasks.
• Experience in report writing and presentations, with client and internal communications.
• Experience in a medium to large, multi-disciplinary environment.
• Membership with IFE, CABE, RICS, IET, CIOB or working towards membership.
