Enterprise Data Architect – Healthcare

Overview

In this role you will provide architectural leadership across NHS data platforms, analytics and interoperability programs. You’ll bridge strategy and delivery, ensuring architectures align with enterprise standards and national policy. You will shape end-to-end data lifecycles, secure environments, and federated platforms while collaborating with cross-functional teams. This is a hands-on, transformation-focused position at scale, with meaningful impact on patient data and health outcomes. Responsibilities

• Define and maintain enterprise architecture artefacts (target operating models, reference architectures, roadmaps, standards) across healthcare data landscapes
• Provide hands-on architectural direction to delivery teams to ensure scalable, secure designs
• Bridge enterprise strategy and solution delivery to realise architectural intent in practice
• Establish architecture governance (ADRs, design assurance) and maintain patterns, standards, and guardrails
• Support investment decisions through structured architectural assessment
• Lead architecture across end-to-end data lifecycles (ingestion, curation, analytics, research, consumption)
• Oversee Secure Data Environments (SDEs) and Federated Data Platforms (FDPs) for regulatory compliance
• Design and govern architectures using Snowflake and modern cloud data platforms
• Ensure clear separation and linkage between operational, analytical, and research data use cases
• Engage NHS domain stakeholders across DHSC, ALBs, ICBs, providers and national programs
• Collaborate with data engineers, platform engineers, analysts, and product owners to resolve complex architectural issues
• Lead architecture/design workshops with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders
• Provide pragmatic trade-offs balancing policy, risk, cost, and delivery timelines

Key requirements

• Proven experience as an Enterprise Architect in large, complex organisations
• Hands-on experience delivering architectures across data platforms, analytics, and integration
• Experience operating architecture governance in live delivery environments
• Strong understanding of NHS data landscapes and SDEs/FDP concepts
• Familiarity with national NHS initiatives (SPR, HDRS) and evolving NHS model (DHSC, ALBs, ICBs)
• Knowledge of modern data architectures, cloud data platforms, data lakes/lakehouse, and analytics platforms
• Experience with Snowflake or equivalent enterprise data platforms
• Understanding of data lifecycle management, metadata, lineage, governance, and healthcare information security
• Ability to design architectures across multi-cloud or hybrid environments
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication of complex concepts to diverse audiences
• Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
