Overview

As a Software Development Engineer II in Tesco’s Behavioural Data Platform, you design and build high-performance, event-driven backend services that process behavioural data for millions of users. You’ll work in a collaborative, self-organising team to enable real-time, personalised experiences and data-driven decisions. The role offers hands-on growth with Java/Spring Boot, distributed systems, and modern tooling at scale, shaping systems that power analytics and customer experiences. Responsibilities

• Develop features for a backend event-driven platform using Java and Spring Boot
• Pair with senior engineers to design, implement, test, and ship code
• Learn to use observability tools (New Relic, Splunk) to monitor live systems
• Participate in planning sessions to understand requirements and contribute ideas
• Write automated test suites to ensure code correctness and maintainability
• Collaborate with teammates to review code and improve development practices
• Develop an understanding of distributed systems, data processing at scale, and performance optimisation
• Create, maintain, and deploy applications using CI/CD pipelines
• Gain hands-on experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, and managing distributed services

Key requirements

• A working knowledge of Java and an interest in backend development
• Familiarity with object-oriented programming principles
• Some practical experience building event-driven services and/or REST APIs
• A willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment
