Head of Corporate Health and Safety

Overview

In this role you will establish and lead a brand-new Corporate Health & Safety function, building a high-performing team. You will provide strategic direction, influence senior decision-making, and embed safety, accountability and continual improvement across the council. You’ll strengthen governance, assurance and risk management to protect staff and residents, while driving evidence-based improvements. This is a high-visibility opportunity to shape the council’s safety culture and outcomes at scale.

Responsibilities

• Provide corporate assurance that H&S risks are governed, managed and mitigated across the Council
• Ensure compliance with statutory H&S obligations while reducing risk
• Strengthen organisational resilience through proactive risk management and robust assurance frameworks
• Use intelligence, audits and performance data to drive continuous improvement and evidence-based decisions
• Embed accountability and safety leadership across all services
• Translate organisational learning into sustainable policy, practice and workforce capability
• Enhance stakeholder and regulatory confidence through governance, reporting and strategic influence
