Data Center Facility Engineer, Data Center Engineering Operations

Overview

In this role you will maintain and optimise mechanical cooling and water systems across AWS data centers, ensuring reliability and safety. You collaborate with controls engineers to monitor plant performance and support capacity growth. You will tackle demanding mechanical tasks and align with safety standards to keep facilities running 24/7. Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair pipework, valves, and manifolds across cooling loops
• Operate AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, evaporative cooling, and liquid cooling infrastructure
• Perform pressure testing, leak detection and system integrity checks on pressurised water circuits
• Manage water treatment programmes per ACOP L8 and HSG274, including legionella risk assessments
• Maintain and troubleshoot pumps, heat exchangers, CDUs and related components
• Monitor thermal performance and optimise flow, delta-T and energy efficiency
• Support commissioning/decommissioning of mechanical cooling during capacity changes
• Perform routine preventive maintenance (filters, belts, seals, bearings, valves)
• Respond to alarms/incidents within SLA
• Maintain maintenance logs, water treatment records and defect logs
• Collaborate with controls engineers on BMS/SCADA integration for monitoring
• Adhere to site safety procedures (permit-to-work, LOTO, working at height)
• Support continuous improvement to boost reliability and reduce MTTR

Key requirements

• Knowledge of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC, Controls)
• Experience reading/writing procedures, technical docs and engineering drawings
• Knowledge of mechanical room infrastructure (chillers, cooler units, fan controls)
• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics, or NFQ Level 3 (or equivalent)
• Flexible shift/work including weekends/nights/holidays
• Experience with pressurised water systems, pipework installations and fluid distribution
• Knowledge of ACOP L8 and HSG274; experience implementing compliant water treatment regimes
• Understanding of fluid dynamics (flow, pressure drop, cavitation, heat transfer)
• Demonstrable experience with commissioning/decommissioning of mechanical systems (preferred)
