Overview

In this Senior Consultant role, you will provide UK and EU-wide safety advice for complex projects, focusing on dangerous goods, process safety and regulatory compliance. You’ll work across the full asset lifecycle, guiding design, construction and operation with a proportionate, engineering-led approach. You’ll lead or support hazard analyses and safety cases while mentoring junior colleagues and expanding Arup’s dangerous goods capability in the UK and Europe. Responsibilities

• Lead dangerous goods and process safety advice on UK and EU projects
• Deliver DSEAR and ATEX assessments, including hazardous area classification and explosion risk management
• Support major hazard safety cases and reports (COMAH/Seveso-type regimes)
• Lead or support quantitative consequence assessments for dispersion, fire and explosion risks
• Advise clients on UK and EU legislation, standards and guidance
• Plan and facilitate safety workshops (HAZID, HAZOP, bow-tie)
• Provide practical, proportionate safety advice using engineering judgement
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to embed safety into design and delivery
• Provide technical review, quality assurance and peer support across projects
• Support engagement with regulators and independent assessors
• Contribute to bids, proposals and client discussions in UK and EU markets
• Mentor junior colleagues and grow Arup’s dangerous goods capability

Key requirements

• Degree in engineering, science, mathematics or related discipline; postgraduate qualification desirable
• Chartered status with IChemE, IOSH or IMechE (desirable)
• Strong background in process safety or major hazard risk across consultancy, operator, engineering or regulatory environments
• Experience supporting safety decisions with regulators and delivering DSEAR/ATEX and related risk assessments
• Knowledge of UK and EU dangerous goods and process safety legislation and guidance (COMAH/Seveso)
• Experience contributing to or leading safety cases or safety reports for EU projects or regulators
• Ability to explain complex technical issues to clients, regulators and multi-disciplinary teams
• Strong organisational skills; able to work independently across jurisdictions, support BD, and mentor juniors
• DGSA certification or demonstrable DGSA experience (desirable)
• Experience interfacing with regulators, approvals bodies and competent authorities
