In this Backend Software Engineer role, you will modernize a legacy C++ trading system by delivering a robust Java-based solution for real-time trading. You will collaborate with Front Office traders and cross-functional teams to build scalable, low-latency features and integrate AI tooling like Claude. This onsite Newcastle position offers a visible impact in a growing FinTech environment, with opportunities to shape technical direction and mentor peers. Responsibilities

• Transform a complex legacy C++ trading system into a modern Java-based application
• Collaborate with Front Office trading teams and fellow engineers to deliver real-time trading systems
• Develop robust, secure, low-latency Java solutions with a focus on performance
• Engage with clients and internal product teams to align on technical direction
• Leverage AI tooling (Claude) to enhance development workflows and capabilities
• Work onsite in Central Newcastle on a Monday–Friday schedule
• Contribute to scaling and stabilising production systems in a FinTech context

Key requirements

• Strong backend, multithreaded Java development experience
• Solid understanding of financial markets and trading systems
• Experience with real-time systems development and low-latency design
• Comfort using AI tools such as Claude
• Good client-facing communication and collaborative skills
• Curiosity with advanced problem solving
• C++ understanding is beneficial but not essential
• Bachelor in Computer Science or equivalent, with top-tier university background
• Minimum 2.1 classification and A-levels
