Materials Engineer – Tooling Materials Specialist

Overview

In this role you will provide technical leadership on material selection and supplier qualification for contact tooling used in can-making. You will act as a subject matter expert, driving material development, failure analysis, and cross-functional collaboration with designers, toolmakers, suppliers and factory teams. You will coordinate material approvals and tool standardisation, while advancing novel material solutions to enhance process efficiency. This position offers impact through shaping tooling materials strategy and supporting continuous improvement in manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the materials technical resource for tooling and machinery manufacturing operations and project manager for tooling material development
• Specify and qualify materials and coatings (cermets, tool steels, technical ceramics) used in tooling
• Support material selection for design and identify global equivalents
• Coordinate material approval processes and tooling standardisation with Corporate Technologies and Purchasing
• Lead tooling materials development, identifying supplier opportunities and implementing material solutions
• Provide service support for tooling and machine component failure investigations
• Act as laboratory warden and provide metallurgy training
• Provide subject-matter expertise to regional manufacturing and quality leads, plant management and line personnel
• Collaborate with CT teams to tackle routine tasks and complex problems
• Identify and escalate manufacturing or customer issues to technical experts and line management
• Train CT staff on equipment and methods to support projects

Key requirements

• Degree or Master’s in science, engineering or material science
• Significant experience in materials tooling qualifications
• Experience with cermets and technical ceramics
• Strong written and interpersonal/verbal communication
• Teamwork and ability to work under pressure
