Senior Estimator – Civil Engineering

Overview

In this Estimator role you will own the estimating and tendering process for a varied civil portfolio, collaborating with operations, commercial, design and supply chain teams. You’ll price from first principles across earthworks, drainage, concrete and formwork, and manage bills of quantities and risk. The role supports tender adjudications and contributes to project start-ups, with development opportunities under experienced leaders. You’ll work on visible SCAPE projects, shaping outcomes through rigorous cost analysis and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Review tender enquiries, scopes of work and commercial requirements
• Produce accurate estimates from first principles for earthworks, drainage, concrete, reinforcement and formwork
• Complete quantity take-offs from drawings, specifications and schedules
• Develop bills of quantities, schedules of rates and material requirements
• Assess construction methodologies, temporary works, plant, labour and site-resource requirements
• Prepare and issue subcontract and supplier enquiries
• Interrogate supply-chain quotations for exclusions, omissions and risks
• Attend pre-tender meetings, site visits and client discussions
• Produce tender summaries, qualifications and supporting submission documents
• Support tender adjudications and agree final tender price with senior leadership
• Assist with post-tender reviews, contract handovers and project kick-off meetings
• Share knowledge and support development of less-experienced estimators

Key requirements

• Approximately 8–10 years’ civil engineering estimating experience
• Ability to price work accurately from first principles
• Experience of the NEC suite of contracts
• Knowledge of highways methods of measurement and CESMM
• Experience pricing civil engineering projects of varying size and complexity
• Good understanding of temporary works and associated costs
• Confidence using estimating software, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
• Ability to manage competing deadlines with minimal supervision
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage with clients, operational teams and supply-chain partners
