Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you will support the design and implementation of Mechanical systems for the HS2 Route 2 lineside works. You will coordinate with HS2 and Costain+ partners to ensure designs are buildable, compliant, and aligned with site needs. You’ll review technical docs, manage material selection and risk, and contribute to quality, safety, and commissioning activities. This role offers hands-on design and integration work on a landmark rail project with cross-functional collaboration. You will help shape the M&E scope for tunnels and line-side systems, delivering reliable high-speed rail services.

Responsibilities

• Support design, review, and implementation of Mechanical systems for HRS02 HS2 lineside works
• Interface and coordinate with other HS2 Rail Systems contractors (track, signalling, telecoms, OHLE, HV power)
• Review technical documentation, drawings, and specifications
• Chair discipline-specific meetings with HS2 and Costain+ partners
• Undertake material selection and prepare associated technical approval and acceptance documentation
• Understand project programme and feed into reporting mechanisms
• Ensure compliance with UK rail industry standards and HS2 Works Information
• Identify, assess, and manage technical risks and assist in problem resolution
• Produce quality documents such as ITPs and installation verification check sheets
• Support assurance, quality, and safety processes throughout the lifecycle
• Interface with installation and construction teams to ensure designs are practical and buildable
• Provide engineering support during design, installation, testing, and commissioning activities
• Work with Engineering team and Costain+ partners to coordinate requirements and programme delivery
• Liaise with procurement to specify and source appropriate Mechanical equipment
• Coordinate with Design, Safety, Commercial and Planning teams and promote Costain values

Key requirements

• Previous experience on UK rail infrastructure projects
• Mechanical engineering experience in large-scale infrastructure or rail systems
• Strong understanding of Mechanical design principles and UK rail standards (e.g., Network Rail standards, BS 9990)
• Knowledge of Tunnel Fire Main, Tunnel Ventilation, and Cross Passage Door design in rail environments
• Experience in a main contractor or major project environment
• Sound knowledge of Mechanical installation practices and equipment
