Staff Software Engineer – Store Operations

Overview

In this Staff Software Engineer role within the Store Operations C&H team, you’ll drive impactful software solutions for stock keeping and movement across stores and distribution centres. You’ll lead architecture, design, and delivery of large-scale systems in collaboration with cross-functional partners. You’ll mentor engineers, uphold production stability, and push innovation through modern tech and observability. You’ll help shape a digital-first, high-quality engineering culture at a storied brand.

Responsibilities

• Write, test, and debug complex features and distributed systems; optimize deployment pipelines
• Provide technical guidance on high-impact projects and tackle hard technical challenges
• Lead architecture, design, and development of large-scale projects aligned with business requirements and strategy
• Review code for quality, standards, and maintainability
• Collaborate with product, delivery, architecture, infrastructure, and senior stakeholders
• Mentor engineers at all levels and participate in hiring and onboarding to Staff level
• Demonstrate production-first mindset with observability and SLAs while delivering changes
• Explore emerging technologies, maintain the team technology roadmap, and lead production system monitoring strategy
• Create advanced system and operations documentation and share knowledge through internal talks
• Assist with recruitment and onboarding of new engineers
• Engage with stores and customers to iterate based on feedback and improve applications

Key requirements

• Proficient in Java 21+
• Experience with REST APIs using Micronaut and Spring Boot
• Relational databases (Azure SQL/SQL Server/PostgreSQL)
• MongoDB (NoSQL)
• Event processing with Kafka
• CI/CD with GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines
• Code quality tooling such as Sonar
• Microservice architecture
• Azure DevOps, Kubernetes, Docker
• Azure storage, Redis
• Observability tools (Dynatrace, New Relic)
• Git, GitHub
• TDD, BDD
• Experience with AI coding assistants or AI agents
