Associate Civil Engineer – Transportation

Overview

In this role you lead design delivery and multi-disciplinary teams to convert client briefs into compliant, high-quality civil designs. You will collaborate with clients and internal teams to manage scope, budget, and schedules while ensuring design integrity and safety compliance. You’ll work within HDR’s employee-owned culture to deliver impactful infrastructure projects and advance your professional development. This is a hands-on engineering role with leadership and client-facing responsibilities in highway and drainage design contexts.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, management and supervision of project delivery from brief to completion
• Perform engineering concept to detailed design, tender, on-site supervision, and ensure timely delivery
• Coordinate design teams to produce integrated, quality-assured designs
• Maintain QA systems and in-house design reviews
• Ensure designs comply with CDM and health and safety requirements
• Monitor project progress, budget, and resource needs; manage client expectations
• Develop and pursue new business opportunities including bids and proposals
• Mentor and develop staff to build high-performing teams
• Review Engineering Conditions of Contract and ensure regulatory compliance

Key requirements

• BEng, MSc in Civil Engineering, or equivalent subject
• Chartered or Incorporated status or working towards it
• Minimum 10 years’ industry experience in highway and drainage design
• Experience in leading design teams and managing projects within a design consultancy
• Proficiency in Civils 3D, CAD/revit; Bentley MicroStation and REVIT
• Knowledge of NEC, Manual for Streets 2, DMRB, TSRGD, and Highway Works specs
• Strong client relationship skills and commercial awareness
• Experience with bid/proposal preparation and financial planning
• Knowledge of CDM 2015 and Health and Safety legislation
• Confident communicator with leadership ambition
