Overview

In this Lead Systems Engineer/Design Authority role, you provide overarching technical oversight for the end-to-end system solution on the Crenic project, collaborating with internal and supplier teams to meet customer and mission requirements. You guide architecture development, verify subsystem designs, and ensure safety and integrity across the system lifecycle. You will lead an architecture team, influence requirements, and support certification through rigorous tests and reviews. The position blends technical leadership with stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing in a high-stakes defence context.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight of the overall system solution and ensure architecture aligns with customer and business requirements
• Lead the architecture team throughout the project lifecycle and document architecture artifacts
• Influence requirements and enable design and trade-off decisions across subsystems
• Support test planning and verification to achieve system certification
• Act as technical interface between customer and Leonardo Engineering teams
• Deputise for the System Design Authority and guide subsystems during design reviews
• Identify and manage technical risks and opportunities, proposing mitigations
• Collaborate with project stakeholders and SMEs to resolve complex technical issues
• Support junior engineers and share best practices
• Travel within the UK to meet customers and industry partners

Key requirements

• Degree in STEM or equivalent experience
• Strong numerical, analytical, and design skills
• Understanding of system and project lifecycles and change control
• Experience in system architecture activities within the lifecycle
• Problem-solving and decision-making in complex design environments
• Experience influencing system design and integration of a major system
• Stakeholder management under high-pressure conditions
• Experience passing Design Reviews and coordinating with suppliers and integration teams
