Consultant in Acute & General Medicine

Overview

In this role you will be a senior decision maker at the hospital front door, leading the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute medical patients across AMAU, SDEC, and related units. You will help develop a comprehensive 7-day Acute Medicine service and contribute to the Urgent Care Centre project, while supporting colleagues and pursuing potential sub-specialty interests. Responsibilities

• Lead assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute medical patients across AMAU and SDEC
• Develop and support a 7-day Acute Medicine service across the hospital and Health Board
• Contribute to the establishment of the Urgent Care Centre (opening planned for 2026)
• Participate in a 1:11 on-call rota and provide senior clinical decision-making
• Support development of sub-specialty interests and liaison with other specialties
• Teach and supervise trainees; engage in audits and quality improvement initiatives
• Promote evidence-based practice and patient safety

Key requirements

• Full GMC registration
• On Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway CESR) or CCT due within six months
• Valid Advanced Life Support
• Sub-specialty training appropriate for UK consultant practice
• Broad specialty experience and leadership ability
• Experience in clinical governance and audit
• Desirable: UK/NHS experience; teaching qualifications; Welsh language skills (Level 1)
