Research Associate

Overview

As a Research Associate, you will support regulated in vivo studies with mice and rats, upholding high welfare and accurate data standards. You will work under the Research Director to ensure compliant study delivery and day-to-day animal management. You will contribute to welfare-focused protocols, record keeping, and data analysis to support study outcomes. This role offers exposure to regulated procedures, 3Rs principles, and collaboration across the lab to drive meaningful research. Responsibilities

• Maintain high standards of care, welfare and husbandry for mice and rats
• Follow animal welfare, scientific procedures and safety legislation, including the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986
• Follow approved protocols and SOPs with welfare as central consideration
• Maintain accurate written and electronic records, including welfare observations and in vivo datasets
• Perform authorized non-surgical regulated procedures and humane endpoints per license conditions
• Promote and apply the 3Rs to minimize animal use and improve welfare
• Contribute to ELISAs or other biological assays to support study outcomes
• Coordinate ordering of animals and reagents per approved study requirements
• Undertake relevant training and attend meetings
• Carry out general lab duties such as cleaning and maintenance

Key requirements

• BSc or higher in a related scientific discipline, or equivalent experience
• Home Office Personal License (PIL AB)
• Experience caring for mice and rats in a regulated setting
• Calm, welfare-conscious handling of mice and rats
• Proficiency in subcutaneous injections in mice and rats (refinement practices)
• Proficiency in intraperitoneal injections in mice (refinement practices)
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Ability to self-prioritize and work with minimal supervision
• Willingness to undertake necessary training
• Co-operative, flexible attitude
• Physical fitness for frequent lifting and carrying
• Confidentiality and security awareness
