Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you support the Client Design Authority to safeguard and optimize infrastructure systems within a highly regulated environment. You will shape mechanical design packages, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, cost-effective plant modifications. You’ll work on complex infrastructure challenges, contributing to safe, efficient operations at scale. This is a hands-on position in a world-class nuclear engineering group seeking practical, impact-driven engineers.

Responsibilities

• Produce and review infrastructure design packages and specifications
• Define reliability, performance, and operational requirements for systems
• Assess maintenance procedures to ensure safe operations
• Evaluate design, material ageing, and asset suitability for continued operation
• Promote safety, security, and compliance across activities
• Act as an intelligent customer ensuring contract and deliverables meet regulatory requirements

Key requirements

• Broad mechanical engineering experience with pumps, cranes, HVAC, pressure systems, or diesel generators
• Desirable: experience in nuclear or other highly regulated/high-hazard industries
• Ability to develop practical, innovative, cost-effective engineering solutions for plant modifications
• Good understanding of British and international design standards
• Strong analytical skills and evidence-based decision making
• Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder engagement
• Well organized with ability to manage priorities and deadlines
