Civil Engineer

Overview

In this Civil Engineer role, you’ll lead a small team and deliver highway and public transport schemes, from cycleways to major road works. You’ll work within the Highways and Active Travel team, collaborating with clients across Ireland and the UK to meet technical standards, budgets, and programmes. You will mentor junior staff, produce robust designs and documentation, and contribute to bids. The role combines on-site delivery with remote collaboration, offering development towards chartership in a supportive, knowledge-rich environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead junior engineers in designing and delivering highway/public transport projects
• Produce and check designs, calculations, drawings, and scheme documentation to meet quality, cost, and programme criteria
• Oversee junior staff and supervise their work
• Liaise with clients and suppliers, attend progress meetings, and respond to queries
• Manage a small, locally based single-discipline technical team and ensure delivery
• Contribute to bids and business development activities
• Work on-site as required, including out-of-hours work

Key requirements

• Degree/Masters qualification in a relevant discipline
• Experience in civil engineering
• Commercial and customer-focused mindset to meet programme and income targets
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and supervise others
• Knowledge of DMRB, other national standards, and local standards
• Understanding of CDM regulations relevant to highway design
• Ability to assist with briefs for fee quotes
• Ability to deliver on time, within budget, and to required quality
• Keeping up-to-date with industry best practices
• Experience with highway design software (Autodesk Civil 3D, Causeway Flow, AutoCAD) or similar
