Early Reading Literacy Specialist

Overview

As a Literacy Specialist, you will support North Yorkshire coast and surrounding areas to strengthen phonics and early reading. You’ll work with headteachers and reading leaders to diagnose gaps, develop action plans, and model and coach effective phonics practice. You will drive sustainable improvements in early reading through data analysis, coaching, and cross-school collaboration. Responsibilities

• Attend Yorkshire Endeavour English Hub training and development days
• Support partner school leaders to implement the DfE Challenge Checklist and improve phonics and early reading provision
• Coach, support and challenge leaders and teachers to strengthen evidence-informed practice
• Analyse school and pupil performance data to identify priorities and monitor progress
• Ensure partner schools meet programme expectations and engage with meetings and training
• Produce written action plans after each school visit with evaluations and next steps
• Model effective phonics and early reading practice; team teach and coach within phonics lessons and interventions
• Maintain accurate records and collaborate with the Hub Lead and wider team
• Act as an ambassador for Yorkshire Endeavour English Hub and maintain professional relationships
• Aim for phonics screening check outcomes of at least 90% in own practice

Key requirements

• Experienced EYFS/KS1 teacher with strong knowledge of early reading
• Proven track record of improving early reading outcomes
• Experience with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP programme
• Leadership skills to support school improvement beyond own setting
• Currently employed in a primary school judged Good/Outstanding or equivalent under Ofsted frameworks
• Demonstrated Year 1 Phonics Screening Check outcomes and sustained improvement over multiple years
