Overview

As Senior Controls Engineer – Services you will lead controls activities for Battery Energy Storage System projects during operations, focusing on performance, software/firmware lifecycle, grid code compliance, and RCA. You’ll collaborate with field techs and cross-functional teams to maintain system reliability and customer satisfaction, driving improvements through data-driven analysis. You will guide LTSA-related controls compliance and coordinate deployment of upgrades with structured testing and rollback strategies. This role offers impact across global sites, shaping how Fluence delivers dependable energy storage solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Services team to deliver BESS control system requirements aligned with specs and customer expectations
  • Serve as primary controls SME for customers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders
  • Ensure LTSA execution with grid code testing across Europe, Middle East & Africa
  • Collaborate with Field Service Engineers and cross-functional teams to resolve complex controls, software, and system performance issues
  • Plan and execute software/firmware upgrades with risk-mitigated deployment, testing, and rollback
  • Conduct root cause analyses of system events and implement corrective actions
  • Drive product and performance improvements via digital monitoring and data analysis
  • Manage and prioritize control-related improvement tickets and coordinate with Software, RMDC, Nispera, and others for timely resolution
  • Enforce change management for control system changes with full traceability
  • Maintain documentation of software releases, updates, and configurations during service
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and service delivery methods
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Fluence products and controls architectures at site and enterprise levels
  • Build strong relationships with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders to support project execution
  • Travel up to 10% within Europe as required

Key requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in controls/software/automation in power utility, renewable energy, or energy storage sectors
  • Experience with power generation, energy storage, or HV electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of transmission/distribution, EMS, grid codes, and grid services
  • Experience developing, testing, validating control algorithms for grid-connected systems
  • Proven ability to resolve complex technical issues and implement corrective actions

  • Industrial communication/SCADA protocols: IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, IEC 61850 MMS, DNP3, Modbus, TCP/IP
  • PLCs and RTUs; SEL RTACs, relays, metering devices; Siemens relays, meters, SCADA gateways
  • Linux-based OS and command-line
