Staff Software Engineer – Backend

Overview

Join Databricks as a Software Engineer and help build the Lakehouse Platform from our London site. You will work on backend services spanning product to infrastructure, focusing on reliable, secure, high-performance systems and data access across cloud storages (S3, GCS, Azure). You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define SLIs/SLOs and drive long-term reliability. This founding team role offers the chance to influence platform direction and shape a mission-driven data and AI platform.

Responsibilities

• Build reliable, secure and high-performance services and client libraries for storing and accessing large data volumes on cloud backends (AWS S3, GCS, Azure Blob Storage)
• Develop product features enabling easy storage and access to data
• Investigate and fix reliability issues related to Lakebase and reduce downtime
• Define and monitor SLIs/SLOs to guide reliability improvements
• Participate in the full development cycle as a founding member for the London site
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve problems spanning product and infrastructure

Key requirements

• BS degree in Computer Science or related field
• 8+ years of production-level experience in Java, Scala, C++, or similar language
• Experience developing large-scale distributed systems
• Experience with SaaS platforms or Service-Oriented Architectures
• Knowledge of SQL
