Senior Engineering Manager

Overview

In this strategic, hands-on leadership role, you will steer technical strategy and delivery for safety-critical HVAC across sectors such as nuclear, defence, transport, and bio-life sciences. You will lead engineering excellence, standardisation, lean practices, and digital tooling to accelerate projects and ensure compliance. Represent Hargreaves at industry events, build external relationships, and contribute to growth and reputation through best-practice delivery. You’ll shape digital and offsite delivery capabilities to maximise safety and value.

Responsibilities

• Set and implement technical strategy aligned with business and sector goals
• Drive standardisation and harmonisation of engineering processes, specifications and designs
• Lead lean transformation to improve efficiency and value delivery
• Ensure technical excellence and compliance with codes, standards and safety-critical legislation
• Champion digital tools (BIM, DfMA, digital QA/QC, 4D sequencing, offsite QA workflows) to accelerate delivery and assurance
• Oversee engineering delivery from concept to manufacture, installation and commissioning
• Own technical governance, risk management and lessons learned
• Represent Hargreaves at industry events and client forums
• Foster collaboration across manufacturing, design and project delivery teams
• Lead and develop engineering teams, shaping a safety-first culture
• Drive resource planning, succession and skills development including apprenticeships and training
• Support bids and client engagement with technical input and identify new market opportunities
• Contribute to achieving business KPIs: financial, customer satisfaction, project execution, resource utilization

Key requirements

• Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services (or equivalent)
• Extensive experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams in mechanical/HVAC, preferably in safety-critical environments (nuclear, defence)
• Strong track record delivering complex projects from concept to commissioning
• Deep knowledge of UK and European standards, legislation, and best practices in HVAC and specialist ventilation
• Experience driving standardisation, lean techniques, and process improvement in engineering
• Expertise implementing and using digital tools (BIM, digital QA/QC, offsite QA, DfMA, design automation) to accelerate design and assurance
• Experience collaborating across manufacturing, design, and project delivery functions
• Willingness and ability to travel and represent at industry forums and events
• Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills
