Principal Electrical Design Engineer (Data Centres) – London, Bicester or Newcastle

Overview

In this role you lead high-profile electrical design projects for data centre and building services. You will guide multi-disciplinary teams, engage clients directly, and ensure solutions meet robust standards and customer requirements. Your work supports RED’s mission of low energy, sustainable built environments and global delivery. You will shape technical direction, oversee coordination of services, and drive project outcomes with a focus on quality and safety. This is a senior, impact-driven role in a collaborative, ethics-driven consultancy.

Responsibilities

• Lead large projects with client-facing responsibilities in development, design and coordination of electrical installations and systems
• Specify applications of controls, instruments, and operating systems for building engineering services
• Carry out surveys and dilapidation reports on existing electrical/mechanical installations
• Define activities to ensure manufacturing, construction, installation, and testing meet specifications and customer needs
• Make day-to-day project decisions and liaise with clients
• Represent the company at technical meetings with customers, professionals, and contractors
• Ensure calculations and drawings comply with industry and legal standards
• Coordinate engineering services and apply holistic engineering concepts

Key requirements

• BSc/BEng in engineering or equivalent experience
• MCIBSE/MIEE or HNC/HND plus relevant experience
• Working towards Chartered Engineer status
• Significant experience in specification design for multiple building types
• Strong knowledge of health and safety issues and legislation
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel) and IT-based calculation/spreadsheet software
• Knowledge of BS standards/UK regulations/codes
• Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
• Managerial and presentation skills
• Experience supporting project delivery through project management, financial management, QA/QC and technical review
• Background in consulting or construction; international operations experience preferred
• Ability to act ethically in line with company guidelines
