Senior Commercial Property Lawyer

Overview

In this role you join a forward‑thinking, in‑house corporate legal team to handle high‑value commercial property work for the Council and external clients. You will advise on complex transactions and strategic projects, including school and infrastructure developments, while mentoring junior staff. The role blends advisory, drafting and stakeholder engagement within a public sector setting, with a hybrid office pattern and opportunities to shape service delivery and training. You will work with cross‑department teams to support ambitious public projects and stringent quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide complex legal guidance on commercial property transactions (sales, purchases, leases, development agreements)
• Advise on and contribute to Cabinet/Committee reports and attend meetings as required
• Supervise junior staff and deliver training
• Adhere to Legal Services Unit’s LEXCEL quality standards
• Contribute to Staffordshire Legal Services’ marketing and service offering
• Support delivery of high‑value, multi‑party matters including development projects (schools, highways, healthcare)
• Handle compulsory purchase, option agreements, overage, lockout agreements
• Draft complex legal agreements and communication materials

Key requirements

• Qualified Solicitor or fellow of CILEX with practice rights, or Barrister
• Proven commercial property experience in public sector and/or private practice
• Experience representing clients at high‑level meetings
• Strong drafting skills for complex legal agreements
• Clear and engaging written and verbal communication abilities
• Ability to work across departments and manage stakeholder expectations
• Experience supervising staff or mentoring trainees
• Familiarity with development and transactional aspects of commercial property law
