Principal Public Health Engineer – London

Overview

In this role you drive the public health engineering design for large, high-profile projects within a global consultancy. You lead cross-functional coordination, develop and specify building services, and ensure compliance with industry standards. You’ll act as a senior technical lead, guiding clients and project teams from London, Bicester or Newcastle. The role combines technical depth with strategic oversight to advance sustainable, climate-conscious built environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead the running of large projects and coordinate engineering services
• Develop and specify controls, instruments, and operating systems for building services
• Survey and assess existing installations and prepare dilapidation reports
• Ensure designs meet functional specs, industry standards, and client requirements
• Direct project progress through day-to-day decisions and client liaison
• Represent the company at technical meetings with clients and contractors
• Lead coordination of engineering services across disciplines
• Apply holistic engineering concepts to project solutions

Key requirements

• MSc/BEng qualification in Public Health design or equivalent experience
• Minimum 7 years’ experience in Public Health Engineering
• Strong expertise in water services, drainage, sanitation, and fire protection
• Experience with sustainable design (solar hot water, rainwater/grey water)
• Experience on mission-critical/data centre, commercial, or mixed-use developments (highly desirable)
• Familiarity with CIBSE, British Standards, ISO, BSRIA, HSE, CIPHE
• Knowledge of EN, VdS, NFPA, FM international standards (advantageous)
• Good knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Bluebeam, NAVIS; AutoCAD/REVIT advantageous but not essential
• Excellent communication and stakeholder interfacing skills; ability to lead and mentor juniors
• Strong ability to deliver complex projects independently and drive deliverables
