Director of Product Design – Payments

Overview

As Director of Product Design at Airwallex, you will lead a design team responsible for a critical division, shaping strategic design directions and delivering high-quality, user-centered solutions. You will align design initiatives with business goals and collaborate closely with product, engineering, and design systems to enable seamless cross-platform experiences. You’ll mentor designers, foster innovation, and drive end-to-end UX across desktop, mobile, and apps. This role offers impact at scale within a fast-moving fintech environment.

Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership: partner with senior product leaders to define design requirements and align with business strategy; create design project plans with scope, effort estimates, and resources
• Design excellence: advocate for user needs and deliver innovative solutions with cross-functional teams; lead end-to-end UX across platforms
• Team development: mentor designers, provide actionable feedback, and support professional growth; coach for high-quality outcomes
• Process and delivery: manage timelines and performance metrics, conduct retrospectives to optimize team performance; ensure seamless handoff with engineering

Key requirements

• 12+ years in UX/Product design with a strong portfolio on complex systems and multi-channel journeys
• 5+ years of management/mentoring experience in design teams
• Proficiency in advanced UX methods (generative research, IA, interaction design, usability testing) and system-level thinking
• Excellent communication skills with ability to articulate design rationale to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced environments
