Active Travel Engineer

Overview

In this role you will deliver highways and active travel solutions across the UK, providing design expertise for commercial, residential, healthcare and education schemes. You will work with cross-functional teams to ensure technical excellence, compliance, and client satisfaction, shaping public realm and cycle infrastructure. You’ll liaise with authorities, contribute to bids, and support adoption processes, making a tangible impact on sustainable travel and transport networks. Responsibilities

• Design highways per standards (Local Highway Authority, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, DMRB, NRSWA)
• Design drainage consistent with Sewerage Sector Guidance and SuDS Manual (CIRIA C753)
• Design public realm and active travel improvements; coordinate utilities
• Site monitoring and assist in fee proposals/bid production
• Liaise and negotiate with highway/planning authorities on designs
• Coordinate highway and drainage adoption processes and legal requirements (S278, S38, S104)
• Produce technical reports; attend client/architect/contractor/local authority meetings

Key requirements

• Degree in Civil Engineering or similar
• Working towards or holding Incorporated or Chartered status
• Experience in design of commercial and residential developments, infrastructure, external works, drainage
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Site 3D, Causeway Flow (or InfoDrainage), Vehicle Tracking, and KeyLINES/SIGN/POST
• Solid knowledge of national design standards and local authority/National Highways processes
• Strong communication and negotiation skills
• Good time management and organisational skills
