Fire Alarm Designer

Overview

In this role you will design fire alarm and detection systems for flagship UK frameworks within Galliford Try’s Asset Intelligence unit. You will translate client requirements and site surveys into detailed designs while ensuring compliance and governance. You’ll collaborate with subcontract designers and internal teams to support tendering and delivery, shaping safer, compliant, cost-effective solutions. The role offers exposure to critical infrastructure projects and a pathway to grow through diverse, high-profile programs.

Responsibilities

• Design and technical delivery of fire alarm and detection systems based on client requirements and site surveys
• Produce detailed design documentation (detector layouts, PA/VA systems, zone drawings, cause & effect, loop schematics, panel layouts, fire strategies, calculations)
• Ensure designs comply with standards (BS5839, BS6266, BS7671, BS7273) and balance cost with performance through value engineering
• Provide technical input into subcontract design packages and supplier orders
• Lead or support site visits, surveys, and 3D model reviews; act as point of contact for subcontract designers
• Review subcontractor designs, pricing, and specifications for quality and accuracy; collaborate with internal teams on tenders and project delivery
• Manage design changes and enforce scope and change control processes
• Contribute to design management plans, design programmes, and fire accreditation documentation
• Assist with smooth handover to construction and commissioning teams

Key requirements

• Proven experience in fire systems design (detection, PA/VA, suppression, fire stopping)
• Strong knowledge of system integration and fire equipment
• Familiarity with BIM / PAS 1192 and navigating 3D models
• Experience producing URS/FDS documents
• Knowledge of CDM regulations and temporary works
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office
• ONC / HNC / Degree or NVQ equivalent in a relevant discipline
