Overview
In this role you will lead the mechanisms function to deliver high‑reliability electro‑mechanical solutions, ensuring on‑time, within‑budget project outcomes and aligned risk profiles. You will partner with Mechanism Experts, Project Managers and other functional leads to enforce design policies, develop capabilities, and resolve resource constraints. You will mentor engineers, drive mechanism design, analysis and integration, and manage risks across hardware, software and firmware. This role offers impact through shaping SSTL’s mechanism capabilities and roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain team policies and procedures aligned with SSTL’s engineering approach
- Ensure the team has required electro-mechanical skills for current and future projects
- Review work package managers for feasibility and alignment with practices
- Monitor performance indicators and implement corrective actions
- Collaborate with Project Managers and other function leads to resolve resource conflicts
- Address key technical and project issues related to mechanisms promptly
- Provide leadership through training, mentoring, and professional development in design, analysis, and integration
- Identify and manage risks in mechanisms and electro‑mechanical systems and communicate them to projects
- Coordinate with PMs and engineers to ensure deliverables meet technical capability, risk, and cost targets
- Identify and source product development to maintain mechanism capability and roadmap
- Maintain a top-level mechanisms roadmap and coordinate resource needs and challenges
- Assist hands-on engineering and debugging of mechanism hardware issues when required
- Contribute to project and design work as needed
Key requirements
- Successful track record in spacecraft engineering or high‑reliability sectors with electro‑mechanical or mechanisms systems
- Experience diagnosing hardware, software, firmware interactions across mechanical assemblies
- Mechanical design background with experience in stress‑critical components, tolerancing, materials, and manufacturing methods
- Strong management skills and ability to lead teams
- Self-motivated
- Excellent communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of mechanism products and components (bearings, actuators, transmissions, feedback devices)
- Ability to work with mechanism design, analysis and electro‑mechanical integration
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar; Ansys; Matlab; MS Office
