Technical Director (EIA/Water)

Overview

In this role you will lead environmental inputs for large-scale water infrastructure and planning projects within a multidisciplinary team. You drive environmental design, assessment and management across the project lifecycle and help expand the water sector offering. You will engage clients, regulators and diverse experts to deliver sustainable solutions that support Net Zero and resource management commitments. This is a hands-on leadership position with a focus on strategic growth and delivering high-quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Direct and lead environmental teams across multi-disciplinary project designs and assessments
• Oversee recruitment, bidding, project delivery, and financial management
• Expand and diversify the water sector offering through thought leadership and client engagement
• Provide environmental advice to clients, project managers and colleagues
• Promote sustainable design and environmental enhancement across projects
• Lead large, complex projects with focus on technical, quality, commercial, and HSE performance
• Develop client relationships and identify resourcing, programming, strategy, and delivery opportunities
• Lead business development, including proposals, bids, and framework opportunities
• Develop innovative techniques (e.g., Digital EIA, Technical Excellence, Future Ready)
• Drive performance improvement and career development within the team
• Foster an inclusive, health and safety focused team culture
• Contribute to the achievement of the WSP business strategy

Key requirements

• Experience delivering environmental assessments for major water schemes (e.g., SROs or NSIP planning)
• Familiarity with HRA and WFD assessments
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong report writing and QA
• Proven people management and capability to upskill internal teams
• Market and water sector understanding with ability to drive business growth
• Confident engagement with clients, regulators and stakeholders
