Lead Construction Engineer – Piping

Overview

As the Piping Lead on a Teesside site, you will oversee all piping construction activities executed by EPC and PCC Contractors, ensuring safety, quality, and readiness from erection to handover. You will lead build-it-tight and build-it-clean standards while coordinating with multiple teams across on-site and off-site facilities. The role involves occasional travel to Paris and other facilities, and a Monday–Friday site pattern with possible overtime. You drive systemised completion and successful turnover to mechanical completion and client handover.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all piping construction activities by EPC and PCC Contractors
• Manage health and safety, industrial relations, quality, and constructability for piping work
• Coordinate erection, welding, testing, and pre-commissioning of piping systems
• Lead turnover through to mechanical completion and client handover
• Ensure piping cleanliness, preservation, and readiness for commissioning
• Lead build-it-tight and build-it-clean initiatives with contractor compliance
• Coordinate with EPC piping leads, off-site fabrication, NDE, painting, equipment leads, SIP scaffolding, and pre-commissioning/commissioning leads
• Ensure compliance with client/project specifications and safety standards; monitor EPC reporting
• Collaborate with EPC engineering, site contractors, and off-site providers to deliver pipework installation and handover
• Monitor and address technical queries, deviations, and change requests with engineering and contractors
• Support construction planning and progress reporting with accurate contractor updates
• Participate in walkdowns, punch lists, and discipline handover documentation
• Identify and mitigate equipment-specific risks; apply lessons learned throughout the project lifecycle
• Lead interface with other disciplines to ensure integrated installation

Key requirements

• Demonstrable experience in a similar piping leadership role on large EPC projects
• Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams
• Experience overseeing piping installation, supports, painting, insulation, and pre-commissioning activities
• Proven ability to manage safety and quality on construction sites
• Experience in turnover and handover to client and mechanical completion
• Good understanding of change management, TQs, NCRs, and method statements
• Strong planning and progress reporting skills
• Familiarity with multi-discipline interfaces and construction sequencing (desirable)
• Experience in energy transition or large-scale industrial projects (desirable)
