Overview
In this role you will underwrite and grow a marine and energy liability portfolio, balancing profitability with strategic expansion beyond traditional upstream into power and utilities. You’ll contribute to a lead book, shape client solutions, and collaborate with a specialist claims function to deliver integrated risk management. The role blends portfolio analytics, market engagement, and governance within a high-trust, cross-functional team. Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage a portfolio within appetite and authority to support profitable growth.
- Contribute to the lead book and set underwriting positions for market followers.
- Develop new business opportunities, clients, and products.
- Build strong broker/trading partner relationships and represent the syndicate at market meetings.
- Structure client-focused, profitable solutions and negotiate terms with confidence.
- Monitor portfolio performance, trends in pricing and claims, and contribute to reviews.
- Support account development amid energy market shifts, including power and utilities growth.
- Collaborate with marine and energy claims colleagues to integrate claims propositions.
- Analyze risks per guidelines to make sound, long-term decisions.
- Understand and negotiate wordings per corporate standards.
- Identify business opportunities and build robust business cases for each opportunity.
- Drive client experience through issue resolution, product design, and claims management.
- Act as a peer reviewer for risks and endorsements as required.
- Participate in underwriting meetings and maintain the risk entry system.
- Produce accurate class reports and monitor premium payments for unusual trends.
- Stay alert to developments affecting profitability and opportunities, reporting to leadership.
- Maintain underwriting documentation to high standards.
- Underwrite within authority, ensure governance and regulatory compliance.
- Represent the role in external activities and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to wordings and product development, and support less experienced colleagues.
- Act as a company ambassador, strengthening market reputation and client relationships.
- Adhere to Conduct Rules and Values of MS Amlin.
Key requirements
- Marine or energy liability underwriting experience in the London market.
- Experience of leading business or readiness to move into a lead role.
- Track record of writing new business and developing broker relationships.
- Sound technical judgment and ability to make quick decisions.
- Strong negotiating, networking, and relationship-building skills.
- Good understanding of relevant risk, regulatory, and legal requirements.
- ACII or similar qualification would be advantageous.
