Chief Engineer

Overview

In this role you lead the engineering function on defence vessels, ensuring safe, compliant operation and maintenance of machinery. You work closely with crews and technical teams to sustain vessel availability and environmental safety, driving reliable performance and continuous improvement. You will shape safety culture, manage engineering records, and support dockings and complex maintenance across multiple ships. This is a mission‑critical position with a focus on trust, safety and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair vessel auxiliary machinery and systems to meet Flag State and Class standards
• Manage performance, availability, safety and security of engineering equipment under your responsibility
• Maintain accurate engineering records and maintenance documentation in company systems
• Lead fire prevention and firefighting standards onboard vessels
• Act as Ship’s Safety and Environmental Officer and promote safe practices and environmental compliance
• Collaborate with Port Technical team to support dockings, maintenance, and readiness
• Manage engineering stores, fuel and spare parts requirements
• Support engineering maintenance across multiple vessels when required
• Operate winches during towing operations when appropriate

Key requirements

• STCW Chief Engineer qualification
• <9000KW engine rating
• STCW ancillary courses completed
• Strong communication skills with stakeholders
• Excellent health, safety and risk awareness
• Problem solving and ability to deliver commitments
• Eligible for BPSS/security clearance
• Valid ENG1 Medical Certificate
