Apply for the Staff FPGA Engineer
Location: Oxfordshire
Job Description:

Overview

In this Staff FPGA Engineer role, you will own and shape FPGA-based signal processing and control functions for advanced quantum systems. You’ll drive RTL design, verification, modelling, hardware testing, and system-level debugging, collaborating with electronics, software, and quantum engineering teams. You’ll tackle technically complex problems at scale, delivering robust FPGA solutions that enable larger, more capable quantum platforms. This is a hands-on, technically senior role with meaningful ownership and impact on cutting-edge quantum technology.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop critical signal processing and control modules for FPGA hardware
  • Lead RTL design and verification using SystemVerilog/Verilog/VHDL
  • Perform modelling, simulation, and hardware testing across the FPGA stack
  • Conduct system-level debugging with cross-functional teams (electronics, software, quantum engineering)
  • Provide hands-on hardware debugging using JTAG, ILA, oscilloscopes and lab equipment
  • Collaborate to integrate DSP blocks (DDC/DUC, DDS, FIR/IIR) and interfaces into FPGA solutions
  • Support verification with code and functional coverage to ensure robust implementations
  • Work with Xilinx UltraScale+ MPSoC platforms and relevant interfaces (JESD204B, ADC/DAC, DDR3/4, ethernet)
  • Contribute to ongoing optimisation and scaling of FPGA-based control and signal processing pipelines
  • Drive technical ownership and leadership within the FPGA team

Key requirements

  • 10+ years hands-on FPGA development experience
  • Strong RTL design and verification using SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL
  • Extensive FPGA-based DSP experience (DDC/DUC, DDS, FIR/IIR)
  • Experience with Xilinx UltraScale+ MPSoC platforms
  • Modelling and simulation using Python, MATLAB, or Simulink
  • Strong verification experience including code and functional coverage
  • Hands-on hardware debugging using JTAG, ILA, oscilloscopes, and lab equipment
  • Knowledge of JESD204B, ADC/DAC interfaces, DDR3/4, 10Gb Ethernet, digital control algorithms, embedded Linux, or ASIC development (advantageous)
  • collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • problem-solving and debugging mindset
  • technical ownership
  • SystemVerilog/Verilog/VHDL
  • RTL design and verification
  • FPGA-based DSP (DDC/DUC, DDS, FIR/IIR)
