Principal Engineer (AWS & Java)

Overview

In this role you will be the most senior hands-on technical expert for the Risk Screening platform, translating architectural intent into robust production systems. You’ll own non-functional characteristics like latency, scalability, and reliability, ensuring designs are realized and validated in production. You’ll lead complex, high-impact changes with Java and AWS, collaborating with architects and engineering teams to uphold standards. This is a high-visibility, technical leadership role with broad influence and a focus on long-term sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Act as the senior technical authority for implementation within the Risk Screening platform
• Collaborate with enterprise and solution architects to validate designs and guide development
• Lead the implementation of complex, business-critical changes with emphasis on quality, performance and maintainability
• Provide hands-on Java expertise (concurrency, performance, API design)
• Define and validate non-functional requirements (latency, throughput, scalability, reliability)
• Drive cloud scaling and capacity management for predictable performance under varying loads
• Work with large databases/data stores on performance and operational management
• Solve complex, multi-component problems and serve as escalation for system-level issues
• Guide teams on AWS best practices, elastic scaling, and cost-efficient cloud usage
• Coach and mentor engineers, promoting engineering standards and practical excellence
• Partner with SRE and operations teams to improve operability and reduce customer impact
• Review critical changes for non-functional requirements around security, reliability and performance
• Influence engineering culture through leadership-by-example

Key requirements

• Extensive experience as a Principal Engineer or equivalent in large-scale production systems
• Deep, hands-on Java expertise (Java 11+; JVM, concurrency, performance optimization)
• Strong experience building/running distributed systems at scale (performance, scalability)
• Proven ability to work with large databases/data platforms (performance tuning, operational management)
• Solid production operations understanding (observability, incident management, reliability engineering)
• Ability to influence teams through technical credibility
• Experience with AWS in real-world operations and cloud scaling
• Track record of delivering robust, secure production systems
