Principal Electrical Design Engineer (RED Specialist Services) – London or Newcastle upon Tyne

Overview

As a Principal Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead the electrical design and coordination for large building projects within RED Specialist Services. You will work closely with clients and cross-functional teams to develop and specify control systems and ensure compliance with standards. The role combines technical leadership with project oversight, delivering robust, build-ready solutions that support low-energy, sustainable outcomes. This is a client-facing, strategic position at a global consultancy with a focus on zero-carbon built environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead the running of large projects with client liaison and coordination of engineering services
• Develop and specify control systems and operating strategies for building services
• Perform surveys and dilapidation reporting on existing installations
• Ensure designs meet functional specs and customer requirements
• Provide day-to-day project progress decisions and client advice
• Represent the company at technical meetings with customers and contractors
• Ensure calculations and drawings comply with industry standards and regulations
• Lead the coordination of electrical and mechanical services across projects
• Apply holistic engineering concepts to select appropriate design solutions

Key requirements

• BSc/BEng in engineering or equivalent experience
• Working towards Chartered Engineer status
• Experience in specification design for multiple building types
• Strong knowledge of health and safety issues and legislation
• Proficiency with MS Office and IT-based calculation tools
• Understanding of BS standards/UK regulations and codes
• Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
• Managerial and presentation skills
• Background in consulting or construction preferred
• Experience with international project operations is advantageous
