Technical Director – Mechanical Engineering

Overview

In this Technical Director role you will provide technical leadership for Mechanical Engineering within the national D&AT Practice, driving high-impact projects in the UK water sector. You will shape engineering strategy, governance, and delivery across complex programmes from feasibility to construction, while growing the mechanical capability and nurturing client relationships. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to solve challenging, high-risk problems and deliver measurable outcomes for critical infrastructure. This position offers broad scope, international relevance, and significant influence on practice development and project success.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership within the Mechanical Engineering discipline for the national D&AT practice
• Represent the company’s Mechanical Engineering expertise to current and prospective clients
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across project teams and operations
• Recommend improvements to processes, services, and technical practices with strong governance
• Lead technical input into bid proposals and coordinate cross-functional submission teams
• Identify opportunities for cross-selling and strengthen client relationships through value propositions
• Grow and manage the Mechanical engineering capability, supporting talent development and succession planning
• Anticipate business, regulatory, and technology challenges and advise senior leadership
• Provide strategic oversight across complex, multidisciplinary projects for safe, compliant delivery

Key requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Chartered Mechanical Engineer
• Extensive experience in senior technical roles leading complex, high-risk projects
• Recognised expertise in pumping systems and water and wastewater treatment design
• Experience in the UK Water market is essential
• Proven design integration experience for mechanical equipment across all design phases including construction
• Knowledge of design codes and standards including CDM Regulations and DSEAR
• Commercial acumen with experience shaping proposals and driving growth
• Strong communication skills for senior stakeholder engagement and cross-cultural delivery
