Overview

In this lead-capability role, you will shape underwriting governance and enablement at Markel, balancing hands-on technical underwriting with team leadership. You’ll guide governance standards, controls and regulatory alignment while developing a newly formed Enablement Team that supports Product, Pricing and Underwriting leaders. The position offers high visibility and a chance to influence how the function operates and grows. You will work closely with senior underwriting leadership to drive improvement and excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain underwriting governance standards across the business
  • Review and approve non-standard endorsements
  • Support underwriting controls, delegated authorities and governance processes
  • Monitor adherence to underwriting guidelines and protocols
  • Support implementation of legal and regulatory changes
  • Analyse underwriting data and governance reporting
  • Collaborate with Product Line Leaders and senior stakeholders
  • Lead governance, remediation and operational projects impacting profitability and regulatory objectives
  • Act as primary contact for governance queries and technical underwriting support
  • Lead, coach and develop the Underwriting Enablement Team
  • Provide guidance, performance management and workload prioritisation
  • Build processes and operating models for the newly created function
  • Shape the future direction of the team as it grows

Key requirements

  • Significant experience within underwriting, technical broking or governance-focused insurance roles
  • Strong technical underwriting knowledge
  • Experience with underwriting controls, governance or regulatory requirements
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and organisational abilities
  • Experience coaching, mentoring or leading others
  • ACII qualification (advantageous)
  • Proactive, improvement-focused mindset with interest in tech/AI for process improvements
  • Product experience in Financial Lines, Liability, Commercial insurance is advantageous
