Section Engineer

Overview

As Section Engineer, you will lead the delivery of a defined track and civil works section on London Underground assets. You act as the interface between design and construction, ensuring safe, design-compliant execution and timely handover. You will work on high-profile infrastructure projects, resolving buildability issues and supervising engineers and apprentices. This role places you at the heart of delivering right-first-time engineering in a live rail environment, with opportunities to influence safety, quality and project outcomes. You will be based at the Cockfosters/Stratford site offices and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to keep London moving.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering delivery for a track and civil works section
• Coordinate design-to-construction interface and resolve buildability issues
• Produce and manage Inspection and Test Plans and related quality records
• Oversee setting out, dimensional control and survey documentation
• Manage as-built records, handback documentation and red-line drawings
• Prepare method statements and work packages to communicate requirements and standards
• Support access planning, including closures and blockades, and provide logistics inputs
• Monitor progress, budget and risk, escalating issues as needed
• Mentor and develop Site Engineers, Assistant Engineers, graduates and apprentices

Key requirements

• Engineering qualification in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Experience as Site Engineer or Section Engineer in rail with track, permanent way or civil works
• Strong setting out and dimensional control skills
• Experience with ITPs, quality records and handback documentation
• Health and safety qualification (e.g., SMSTS, IOSH, NEBOSH)
• Collaborative leadership and ability to develop junior engineers
