Reports to: Managing Director / Commercial Director

Job Purpose

The Health, Safety & Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the company’s Health & Safety Management System while ensuring compliance with all relevant UK legislation, customer requirements and internationally recognised standards.

The role is responsible for driving a proactive safety culture, reducing business risk, maintaining statutory compliance, supporting operational excellence, and ensuring the organisation continually improves its environmental, sustainability and governance performance.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety

  • Lead the company’s Health & Safety strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant HSE legislation.
  • Develop, review and implement Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Produce and review Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work (RAMS).
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and audits.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Complete root cause investigations.
  • Implement corrective and preventative actions.
  • Manage accident reporting including RIDDOR where applicable.
  • Maintain accident and incident statistics.
  • Ensure adequate First Aid and Fire Warden provision.
  • Coordinate annual Fire Risk Assessments.
  • Organise fire drills and emergency planning.
  • Manage COSHH assessments.
  • Manage LEV inspections.
  • Oversee PPE selection and compliance.
  • Ensure machinery is compliant with PUWER.
  • Coordinate LOLER inspections where required.
  • Ensure statutory inspections remain in date.
  • Manage contractor safety.
  • Conduct inductions for employees, visitors and contractors.
  • Maintain Health & Safety training matrix.

Compliance

Manage and maintain compliance with:

  • ISO Management Systems
  • FSC® Chain of Custody
  • EcoVadis
  • CDP Reporting
  • Sedex
  • SafeContractor
  • CHAS
  • Modern Slavery Act
  • UK GDPR (where operationally required)
  • Packaging Regulations
  • PPWR requirements
  • EUDR requirements (where applicable)
  • Insurance compliance requirement

Audits

Lead all compliance audits including:

  • Internal audits
  • Corrective action management

Environmental & Sustainability

  • Support carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Maintain Carbon Footprint reporting.
  • Coordinate sustainability reporting.
  • Improve waste reduction initiatives.
  • Promote recycling programmes.
  • Assist with ESG reporting.

Training

Develop and deliver training including:

  • Health & Safety induction
  • COSHH
  • DSE
  • PPE
  • Working at Height
  • Contractor Management
  • Toolbox Talks
  • Environmental Awareness

Documentation

  • Procedures
  • Method Statements
  • Emergency Plans
  • Inspection records
  • Training records
  • Audit reports

Monitoring & Reporting

Produce monthly reports covering:

  • Near misses
  • Audit scores
  • Corrective actions
  • Training compliance
  • Compliance status
  • Outstanding actions
  • Business risks
  • Present reports to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Assess contractor competence.
  • Review RAMS.
  • Monitor contractor performance.
  • Maintain Approved Contractor List.
  • Develop a positive safety culture.
  • Identify business risks.
  • Recommend improvements.
  • Benchmark against industry best practice.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
  • Reduce accidents and compliance risks

Knowledge & Experience

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum)
  • Minimum 5 years’ Health & Safety experience
  • Manufacturing environment experience
  • Strong understanding of UK H&S legislation
  • Competent Microsoft Office user
  • NEBOSH Diploma
  • IOSH Membership
  • Chartered IOSH (CMIOSH)

  • Stop unsafe work.
  • Remove unsafe equipment from service.
  • Suspend contractor activities.
  • Recommend disciplinary action for serious safety breaches.
  • Escalate compliance risks directly to Directors.
  • Implement immediate control measures where serious risks are identified.
