Principal Genetic Counsellor

Overview

In this role you will deliver expert genetic counselling within the Principal Genetic Counsellor team. You will take a lead in one or more clinical areas (rare genetic disease, prenatal, inherited cardiac conditions, neurogenetics) to strengthen patient care. The position supports service development, regional transformation, and CPD for colleagues within a forward‑looking NHS genetics service. You may work virtually or face‑to‑face, with some travel to district hospitals as needed, based at Leeds.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert genetic counselling and lead in one or more clinical areas
• Develop and implement service improvements and regional transformation projects
• Supervise/mentor trainee Genetic Counsellors and contribute to staff development
• Promote continuing professional development (CPD) for Genetic Counsellors
• Coordinate both virtual and occasional face‑to‑face clinics and potential travel to district sites

Key requirements

• Registered Genetic Counsellor
• Specialist expertise in at least one clinical area (e.g., rare genetic disease, prenatal, inherited cardiac conditions, neurogenetics)
• Experience in line management or supervision/mentoring
• Willingness to undertake occasional travel for clinics
• Ability to contribute to service development and transformation initiatives
