Site Construction manager

Overview

In this role you will lead the construction and commissioning of the Carnaig 400kV Substation, serving as SSEN Transmission’s on-site representative. You’ll coordinate contractors, ensure safety, quality, and schedule adherence, and manage compliance with statutory and contractual obligations. You’ll drive a strong safety culture and deliverables through close collaboration with project teams and stakeholders. The role is site-based in Inverness/Alness with a focus on impactful electrical infrastructure delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead safe delivery of construction and commissioning activities for the Carnaig 400kV Substation (earthworks, civils, buildings, earthing, switchgear, transformer, electrical installation and commissioning)
• Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors and SSEN operations to ensure safe, quality and on-program delivery
• Monitor progress, resources and KPIs; support NEC contract administration and supervise where delegated
• Maintain accurate records (site diaries, testing docs, photos) and promote a collaborative, safety-focused environment
• Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, planning consents, SHE, CDM, project specs and SSEN procedures
• Manage QA processes (ITPs, inspections, defect management, commissioning readiness)
• Demonstrate strong leadership, planning, and stakeholder management; proficient in MS Office and construction management systems
• Be site-based five days per week and hold a valid driving licence to travel to sites

Key requirements

• Experience in construction and commissioning of High Voltage Substations or similar major projects
• Experience managing contractors and subcontractors, delivering complex construction safely and to programme
• Strong engineering/constructon knowledge including health and safety legislation and CDM Regulations
• Experience with NEC contracts and contractor performance management; previous NEC Supervisor responsibilities preferred
• SMSTS 5-day site management qualification or equivalent; experience in complex construction/utilities/electrical installation & commissioning
• HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Construction Management or related field (ideally)
• Strong leadership, conflict resolution, planning, and stakeholder management skills
• Full driving licence
