Senior Biomedical Scientist Microbiology (Training Officer)

Overview

In this Band 7 role, you will lead and coordinate microbiology training within a busy NHS lab to support staff development and regulatory compliance. You will supervise daily lab operations, ensure high-quality investigations, and drive continuous improvement in a highly regulated environment. The position focuses on training programmes, CPD, and competency assessment, with collaboration across managers and external stakeholders. Responsibilities

• Supervise daily and specialised diagnostic investigations and oversee section operations
• Coordinate training and supervision of BMS staff, AP, MLA, Trainee BMS, and visitors
• Develop, maintain, and review Standard Operating Procedures with Lab and Quality Managers
• Co-operate on evaluation/implementation of new equipment and procedures
• Maintain quality systems, perform audits, and ensure regulatory compliance
• Lead departmental competency assessments and CPD programmes
• Participate in recruitment, induction, and staff development
• Organise and oversee training workshops and CPD accreditation activities
• Maintain training records and CPD portfolios
• Respond to major incidents per Trust policy

Key requirements

• HCPC registration
• IBMS approved MSc degree
• Member of the IBMS
• Certificate of Expert Practice: Training (or equivalent CPD knowledge)
• At least 5 years’ NHS Microbiology Laboratory experience (senior level)
• Supervisory/leadership experience
• Knowledge of current training requirements for Healthcare Scientists
• CPD participation and good communication
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and maintain attention to detail

• Knowledge of General Bacteriology and Containment Level 3 facilities
