Consultant Occupational Health Physician

Overview

As Clinical Lead in Occupational Health, you drive expert, patient-centred care for staff and external clients. You will shape service delivery with the Head of Workforce Health & Wellbeing, aligning with Trust objectives and national developments. Your role focuses on complex clinical decision-making, governance, and strategic collaboration to improve staff health and wellbeing. This is a values-based leadership position at a large NHS trust with opportunities to influence training and service improvement.

Responsibilities

• Make specialist assessments of patients’ health status and occupational health needs using history, examination, procedures and tests
• Obtain or arrange additional medical information from specialists or therapists as needed
• Assess physical and psychological capability for work and make highly specialist clinical decisions in complex cases
• Assess impact of work on health and evaluate risks to patient and others
• Provide information to patients about health, occupational impact and risk control measures
• Communicate respectfully and ensure patients are fully informed
• Advise on treatment, rehabilitation and redeployment options to clients and managers
• Recommend short- and long-term work modifications dictated by health state
• Maintain clear, concise, contemporaneous medical records including findings, tests, referrals and advice
• Involve other health professionals, including GPs, where appropriate
• Provide advice to other specialists and non-specialists in the field and to Occupational Health Advisers
• Communicate with HR and line managers ethically, maintaining medical confidentiality

Key requirements

• Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview date
• Full GMC registration
• MB ChB or equivalent; MRCP or equivalent
• Desirable: Higher degree (MD/PhD)
• Broad clinical experience in Occupational Medicine; knowledge of SEQOHS and clinical governance; CPD and audit experience; research in occupational health
• Desirable: NHS occupational health experience; publications; driving licence; IT skills
• Disclose criminal records as required; UK professional registration current
