Paediatric Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide specialist nursing care to children and young people with asthma and respiratory conditions, including assessment, treatment, education and management of a specialist caseload. Deliver nurse-led and multidisciplinary clinics, undertake respiratory investigations such as FeNO and spirometry, and support safe discharge and transition to adult services.

Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and primary/community care services, provide specialist education and clinical support to staff, and contribute to audit, research, quality improvement, clinical governance and implementation of national asthma and respiratory standards.

Qualifications and Further Training

Essential criteria

• RSCN/RN child with significant experience at Band 6 or above
• Mentorship/teaching qualification

Desirable criteria

• Nurse Prescriber (V300)
• Master’s degree or working towards one in a health related subject
• Advanced Physical Assessment module

Experience

Essential criteria

• Asthma course or extensive respiratory experience
• Significant paediatric experience at Band 6 or above
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of the asthma/ respiratory nurse specialist
• Sound working knowledge of current issues and legislation pertaining to specialist area of practice
• Broad paediatric nursing experience in a variety of settings

Desirable criteria

• Experience of management (patient caseload or staff team)
• Experience of working in a community setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Family dynamics and the implications on the family of a child with chronic illness
• Good working knowledge of child safeguarding practices nationally and locally
• Knowledge of national guidelines and policies pertaining to children
• Knowledge pertaining to informed consent relating to children
• Awareness of current research and its effect on quality patient care

Desirable criteria

• Knowledge of local targets plans and guidelines for children

• Proven teaching ability

• To be competent in the administration of IV therapy via a variety of access routes
• Computer Literate in a variety of software packages
