Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Overview

In this role you will lead a specialist area within a large 24/7 laboratory and help deliver high‑quality pathology services for a large regional network. You’ll work with a multidisciplinary team to drive service improvement, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage people and training. Responsibilities

• Lead a specialist area and provide expert technical services to support clinical diagnoses
• Develop and implement new techniques, equipment, and tests with verification/validation
• Manage day-to-day staffing, training, and workflow to meet turnaround times across shifts
• Participate in audits, training, and potentially clinical trials
• Ensure accurate analysis and documentation in LIMS with IG compliance
• Maintain HCPC standards and provide technical advice to clinical colleagues
• Monitor QA/QC processes (EQA/IQC) and CAPA actions, supporting investigations
• Supervise and line-manage staff, including recruitment, performance and wellbeing
• Prepare and review SOPs, COSHH, risk assessments per ISO 15189:2022
• Attend departmental meetings and coordinate with Operations Managers on stock and compliance
• Deputise for Operations Manager and engage in CPD to stay current
• Ensure adherence to Care Quality Commission, UKAS, and Synnovis policies

Key requirements

• BSc (Hons) IBMS accredited degree or equivalent
• HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
• Specialist portfolio in Microbiology or FIBMS or MSc/FIBMS
• Evidence of ongoing CPD
• Leadership and line-management experience
• Experience supervising junior staff
• Significant practical laboratory experience in a relevant discipline
• Ability to manage testing and troubleshooting of precision equipment and LIMS
• Knowledge of ISO/UKAS quality systems and health and safety regulations
