Solicitor – Specialist Liability

Overview

In this role you will manage a diverse caseload of civil claims against the police and other public bodies, providing timely, commercially aware advice and advancing files through to trial where needed. You will work with a collaborative team, handling pre-litigated and litigated matters while developing technical knowledge and contributing to BD efforts. The position offers hybrid working, exposure to high-profile cases, and opportunities to expand into related areas within the team. Your impact includes shaping defence strategy, evidentiary work, and client outcomes in complex public-law claims.

Responsibilities

• Manage a mixed caseload of pre-litigated and litigated police and public body claims
• Provide timely, commercially aware advice to clients and draft/defend court documents
• Attend conferences and trials with Counsel; prepare and supervise witness readiness
• Oversee disclosure of sensitive documents and handling confidential information
• Achieve annual target of 1,440 chargeable hours and support marketing/BD activities
• Utilise management systems efficiently and maintain technical knowledge through training
• Work flexibly in a hybrid/remote setup and contribute to a collaborative team culture
• Expand practice into related areas such as abuse, discrimination and inquests as interest allows

Key requirements

• 1-8 years PQE
• Experience running fast-paced police claims for multiple forces
• Knowledge of common law false imprisonment, HRA, and PACE
• Solid litigation experience
• Ability to analyse factually and legally complex cases to extract relevant evidence
• Team player with ability to work independently and under pressure
• Detail-oriented with high-standard output for high-profile clients
• Hybrid working preference with in-office option when needed
